Pythagoras is a new stool, which will be presented at this year’s Bernhardt Design ICFF Studio.

The new furniture piece was developed by Northwards Design Studio – who are currently based in New Zealand and run by British-born designer Chris Jackson. The novel approach to flatpack furniture has been developed by Jackson to respond to the impact of imported products on New Zealand’s economy and environment

Pythagoras’ modularity allows for the stool to be compact when in parts so it can be shipped in higher quantities, thereby cutting costs and carbon footprint. It is constructed from a single 2mm laser-cut aluminium folded sheet, with a powdercoat finish.

Pythagoras aims to question the pre-conceived notion and value of ‘flat pack’ furniture, challenging the conventional aesthetic and traditional methods of assembly. The processes involved in production have been kept to a minimum, and costly, visible interventions such as welding and mechanical fixings have been avoided. Due to the modular nature of the design, profiles can be finished pre-assembly, enabling Pythagoras to be assembled in mixed colourways.

Northwards Design Studio was started in 2002. Since it’s inception, the studio has worked on a wide range of projects including setting up design collective TEN.
As well as running Northwards Design Studio, Jackson is currently Senior Tutor in Industrial Design at Massey University in New Zealand. Northwards Design Studio is looking for a manufacturing partner for its production-ready prototype of the Pythagoras stool.
