London architect Tim Bushe of Walker Bushe, is one of 2400 randomly selected people who will become a living monument in Trafalgar Square this summer.

Bushe’s hour on the Fourth Plinth takes place at 4pm, 16 July, and the architect plans to use the time to make a continuous 360 drawing of the square, which he will later auction on eBay for the charity, HFT.  ’This space is normally reserved for kings and generals but Gormley wants the plinth to be a stage for “all of humanity in an image of themselves”,’ says Bushe.

Sculptor Anthony Gormley proposed the idea for the Fourth Plinth, which begins its 100 days on 6 July. Says Gormley:

‘Through elevation onto the plinth, and removal from the common ground, the body becomes a metaphor, a symbol… In the context of Trafalgar Square with its military, valedictory and male historical statues to specific individuals, this elevation of everyday life to the position formerly occupied by monumental art allows us to reflect on the diversity, vulnerability and particularity of the individual in contemporary society. It could be tragic but it could also be funny.’

Bushe chose to donate to HFT because of the support it has given to his youngest sister and hundreds of other people with learning difficulties. Bushe says, ‘HFT continues to work to provide them with a caring environment whilst encouraging them to lead fulfilling and independent lives, all of which fits in rather well with Gormley’s intentions for the plinth’.

Bushe has set up a justgiving page, for anyone who would like to donate online directly to the charity.
